IT Careers – is work-life balance achievable in IT jobs?
Within IT careers or any career path for that matter, work-life balance is a common term. With so many different IT jobs available in 2024, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what this means for everyone. Each person is different, with responsibilities at home and at work that will be unique to them.
However, is the IT industry renowned for offering a great work-life balance? Furthermore, how can an IT professional make small changes to integrate a work-life balance that is just right for them?
Work-life balance in the IT industry
Despite what you might think, IT careers offer a great foundation for creating a work-life balance that works for you! Here are a few reasons we think this…
Remote working: There are many people in the IT and tech industry who no longer find themselves in the office five days a week. We don’t need to cover too many of the benefits here…they’re pretty clear. Ultimately, the flexibility it offers can make work-life planning infinitely easier. Plus, eliminating the same commute is always a plus!
Flexible schedules: Yes, we’re discussing flexibility again! A significant perk of the IT sector is that leaders prioritise working smarter over working harder. This emphasis on efficiency often results in employees needing to spend fewer hours on tasks and enjoying greater flexibility in their schedules.
Workload Management: In IT roles, projects and tasks can often be managed independently, allowing employees to prioritise their workload and manage their time effectively. With proper planning and organisation, IT professionals can avoid feeling overwhelmed by their workload and maintain a better work-life balance.
A wide range of opportunities: IT exists in every industry. This alone means a professional can pick the avenue that is right for them and their life. It’s a positive thing for someone to know that their work is valued in so many industries – when it’s time to move on to a new opportunity, they can determine the best course of action.
Work-life balance in your IT career – how can you improve it?
As we said, work-life balance will mean something different for every person. So, it’s about knowing limits and when to highlight that a workload might be too much. Here are a few things to consider…
Define priorities: Not everything has to be ticked off the list in one day. Identify your personal and professional priorities to ensure alignment with your values and goals. Furthermore, determine what aspects of your life are non-negotiable, so you can allocate time and energy accordingly. Be sure to check on this regularly so you stay on course!
Time management is key: This is not a skill that is exclusive to the workplace. Prioritisation, scheduling, and task batching will maximize productivity and efficiency. However, it allows you to factor in time for leisure, exercise, family time or whatever it is that helps you unwind from the ‘work brain’. Make sure not to multitask, as this can increase stress and impact productivity. It’s not about how fast you get everything done.
Embrace flexibility: Never feel guilty about having flexible time – whatever you do, don’t think about checking those emails! If your employer offers this, it’s up to you to create a healthy mindset and make the most of it. If you feel this is not something offered in your company, start the conversation. Negotiate with your employer for accommodations that support your work-life balance needs, such as compressed workweeks or remote work options.
Prioritise self-care: Make self-care a priority by incorporating activities that promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being into your daily routine. Even if it’s a screen break every hour or so, it will make a huge difference. Small steps lead to big changes! Charge your mental well-being with positive energy – activities that bring you joy and fulfilment outside of work will send you back to the office with a clearer mind.
