Our Journey to Net Zero: Why Carbon Neutral Is Only the Beginning
At TechNET IT Recruitment, part of the Ascent Group, we’re proud to be certified Carbon Neutral. But for us, that certification isn’t a finish line. It’s a starting point. We believe businesses of every size have a part to play in tackling climate change, and we want to be open about where we are, where we’re heading, and how we plan to get there.
Measuring What Matters
You can’t reduce what you don’t measure. That’s why we calculate our full carbon footprint every year, covering our direct emissions, the energy we use, and the wider emissions linked to our operations across our value chain.
In 2023, we set our baseline at 76.51 tonnes of CO₂e. By 2025, we had reduced our total emissions to 66.15 tonnes, a cut of more than 10 tonnes, or around 13.5%, in just two years. It’s real progress, and it shows that meaningful change is achievable. It also shows us how much further there is to go.
Our Commitments
Building on this progress, we’ve set ourselves three clear commitments.
First, we will reduce our absolute Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by at least 50% by 2030, measured against our 2023 baseline. That means bringing our footprint down to around 38 tonnes CO₂e or lower within the next few years. Importantly, this is an absolute target, so it’s about genuinely cutting emissions rather than simply improving efficiency as we grow.
Second, we are committed to reaching Net Zero by 2050, in line with the UK’s national target and the wider global effort to limit warming.
Third, while we work towards those goals, we will maintain our Carbon Neutral status every year through certified offsetting. Offsetting isn’t a substitute for reducing emissions, but it allows us to take responsibility for the footprint we still have today while we continue to shrink it.
Why This Matters to Us
As a recruitment business, our biggest asset is people: our team, our candidates and our clients. The world they live and work in matters to us. Many of the technology professionals we work with are building the tools and systems that will help drive a lower-carbon future, and we want our own business to reflect the same forward-thinking values.
We also know that clients and candidates increasingly want to work with organisations that take sustainability seriously. Setting clear, measurable targets and reporting on them openly is how we hold ourselves accountable.
Looking Ahead
The road to 2030 and beyond will take continued effort across everything we do, from how we travel and power our offices to the suppliers we choose to work with. We’ll keep measuring, keep reporting and keep looking for new ways to reduce our impact.
